Sonnet to Cats

A Petrarchan Sonnet to my cats Peaches and Marshmallow

Peaches & Marshmallow: A Sonnet
by Brent McCulley (with help from my daughter Alexandra)

Betwixt a rat and cat thy howls beseech
Me—food you seek, or verily I know
Not what; a snaggle tooth upon my toe!
You know not mew-ing, thus we named you screechy.
T'not track thy litter daily I entreat
Thee—full of grace, yet drama when I close
The chambers of the boys and interpose:
Resignéd to thy couch in all defeat.
A tweedle-dee and dum in feline story
Of victory and rodent-killing slaps—
Yea, tales of mice and roaches; O' the glory
To be of aristocracy. My lap
Thy throne it is, a sleeping dormitory
Where king and queen respire in cat naps.
